Belgian Shepherds

Appearance and Habits of Belgian Shepherds

Belgian Shepherds are medium-sized dogs with a square, relatively slender build, featuring well-defined, strong muscles, a deep chest, and a neatly cut waist. Their habits are adapted for long runs and jumps. They resemble German Shepherds in their wolf-like appearance, similar head and body shapes, large upright triangular ears, and a straight, downward tail. Males are typically larger and heavier than females. The height at the withers for males ranges from 61 to 66 cm, and for females, 56 to 61 cm. Males weigh between 25 and 30 kg, while females weigh between 20 and 25 kg.

Belgian ShepherdsCharacter and Temperament of Belgian Shepherds

Belgian Shepherds are dogs with lively, strong temperaments. They are intelligent, alert, brave, stubborn, yet cooperative. However, they have sensitive psyches and a strong tendency towards dominance, making proper training, socialization, and a firm, consistent owner essential. These dogs require plenty of physical activity, exercise, and work. They also possess a strong territorial instinct, protecting their home and owner even at the cost of their own life. Well-socialized Belgian Shepherds should not be aggressive toward strangers but remain quietly observant. Puppies should be carefully socialized within the first 3-4 months of life. Without proper socialization, they may display aggression toward other animals and dogs. They need constant contact with their owner, and training should be based on positive reinforcement, rewarding good behavior. Unlike German Shepherds, they do not respond well to harsh training methods. Well-trained Belgian Shepherds can become loyal family dogs who adore children, but they are not recommended for first-time or inexperienced owners.

Requirements for Belgian Shepherds

All varieties of Belgian Shepherds are highly active dogs that need plenty of physical exercise, making them unsuitable for people without the time or ability to engage in long walks and intense physical activity. They have strong personalities and temperaments, especially the Malinois variety, which makes them inappropriate for inexperienced or weak-willed owners. They do not enjoy being left alone for long periods, and if left in an empty apartment for hours, they may become destructive. They prefer to constantly accompany their owner. Belgian Shepherds also shed heavily 1-2 times a year (in fall and spring). If they live indoors, they may shed lightly year-round. Regular grooming, ear cleaning, eye care, and nail trimming are necessary. Though not requiring specific preparation for shows, Belgian Shepherds have a naturally appealing look. As for their diet, they are not picky eaters but have fast metabolisms and high energy needs, requiring food rich in protein and fat.

Belgian ShepherdsHealth and Longevity of Belgian Shepherds

Belgian Shepherds are generally considered healthy, robust dogs. However, they may sometimes experience hip dysplasia, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and increased sensitivity to anesthesia. The average lifespan for all Belgian Shepherd varieties is between 10 and 14 years.
