Cake Recipes for Dogs

Is it your four-legged friend’s birthday, and you’d like to prepare a festive cake? Or perhaps you simply enjoy baking and want to treat your dog? In this article, you’ll find three great cake recipes for dogs.
What Ingredients are Suitable for a Dog Cake?
Dogs are often considered man’s best friend. For many owners, dogs are much more—they’re family members. It’s no wonder so many dog owners enjoy spoiling them with homemade treats, like biscuits, jerky, or even dog cakes. It’s important to use ingredients that are suitable for dogs. A regular cake full of sugar, chocolate, and artificial colors is very unhealthy for them.
Savory cakes are generally better suited for dogs than sweet ones.
Here are some dog-friendly ingredients to use for a dog cake:
- Meat and organ meats
- Fish
- Liver pâté
- Dairy products (cream cheese, cottage cheese, Parmesan, Gouda)
- Vegetables (carrots, beets, spinach)
- Boiled potatoes
- Flours (coconut flour, buckwheat flour, potato flour, cornmeal, rice flour)
- Oils (sunflower, canola, fish oil, flaxseed)
- Herbs (parsley, basil, mint)
- Fruits (apples, berries, bananas)
- Eggs
- Gelatin or agar-agar
Avoid ingredients unhealthy or toxic for dogs, such as sugar, artificial sweeteners, spices, baking powder, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, raw potatoes, raisins, garlic, onions, and avocado.
If your dog has allergies or intolerances, take these into account when baking. Many dairy products are available lactose-free. Plant-based milks like coconut or soy can also work.
The Best Dog Cake Recipes
Tip: If you want to serve your dog an entire cake, consider their size since dog cakes can be quite calorie-dense. Serving in portions is often a good idea, and the rest can be stored in the fridge.
Liver Pâté Dog Cake
Ingredients for the cake:
- 350 g flour (e.g., 250 g potato flour, 100 g buckwheat flour)
- 75 g liver pâté
- 125 g carrots (or baby food carrots)
- 3 eggs
- 3 tbsp sunflower oil
- 20-60 ml carrot juice (or cooking water from carrots)
Ingredients for the frosting:
- 100 g liver pâté
- 2-3 tbsp yogurt (lactose-free if needed)
Instructions: Boil the carrots (unpeeled) in water for 15 minutes, then drain and mash. Mix all ingredients in a bowl until a sticky dough forms. Add carrot juice to achieve the right consistency. Pour the dough into a greased pan and bake at 150°C for about 30 minutes.
Once cool, cut into three layers with circular forms. Spread the pâté and yogurt mixture between each layer.
Quick No-Bake Dog Cake with Wet Food
Ingredients:
- 1 can of wet food (400 g, pure meat like beef or chicken)
- 150 g goat cheese
- 3-4 tbsp carrot juice
- Cucumber and herbs for decoration
Instructions: Open the can and place it upside down on a plate. Carefully remove the food, keeping its shape. Cover with goat cheese and carrot juice frosting. Garnish with cucumber slices and herbs.
Tip: For larger dogs, you can increase the size by using a larger can.
Meatloaf Dog Cake
Ingredients for the cake:
- 500 g ground meat
- 1 egg
- 2 grated carrots
- About 50 g potato flour
Ingredients for the frosting:
- 200 g cottage cheese
Instructions: Mix ingredients and bake at 180°C for 30-45 minutes in a small pan (heart-shaped if desired). Spread cottage cheese on top once cooled, decorating with items like sausage slices, dog treats, or berries.
Using natural colors, such as turmeric, spinach powder, beet juice, berry puree, and carrot juice, you can make a multicolored cake without artificial colorings, which are harmful to dogs.
