Nature has made cats predators, so raw meat is well-digested by their digestive system. In a natural diet, this product provides essential nutrients for their health. However, at a young age, pets are more vulnerable, which raises the question: can kittens be given raw chicken?
Chicken is a light meat that consists of valuable protein without excess fat and contains sufficient calories. But when incorporating chicken into kittens’ diets, it’s important to prepare it in a special way to protect them from parasites and bacteria while still providing complete nutrition.
Is Feeding Kittens Raw Chicken Harmful?
Like beef, chicken is a vital component of domestic pets’ diets, even at a young age. Raw meat promotes proper development in kittens, and it is recommended as a supplement starting from about one month old. Therefore, there’s no need to doubt if kittens can be given raw chicken, but it’s best to buy chicken raised in home environments rather than from large-scale poultry farms.
Chicken from local farms is less likely to contain antibiotics and additives used in mass poultry farming. Farm-raised chicken skin often contains high levels of salts and acidic solutions used to remove feathers. All these substances can cause allergic reactions in kittens and negatively affect their digestive system.
Kittens should only be fed chicken fillet, avoiding chicken skin or minced meat with bone fragments. Skin contains a lot of fatty tissue, which is difficult to digest, while sharp bone fragments could damage a kitten’s digestive tract lining.
The Risk of Parasite Infection
Raw, unprocessed meat may contain worms and pathogenic microorganisms. Laboratory tests show that chicken can contain the following types of parasites:
- Toxoplasma gondii, which causes toxoplasmosis;
- Heterakis gallinarum, a type of nematode;
- Ascarids.
Additionally, chicken may be contaminated with bacteria dangerous to kittens, such as:
- Salmonella;
- E. coli;
- Listeria.
This is why some people wonder if it’s safe to feed kittens raw chicken. Raw meat should undergo special processing before being given to young kittens. Freezing is used to kill parasites. The freezer in a standard refrigerator provides a temperature of -18°C (-0.4°F).
Complete elimination of parasites and microbes is achieved by freezing chicken fillet pieces for 4 days or more. Cold storage also prevents bacteria from reproducing in amounts harmful to kittens. The small amount of bacteria that remains can usually be handled by a kitten’s stomach acid.
Feeding Kittens Semi-Raw Chicken
Some cats prefer cooked or boiled meat since it has a more appetizing aroma. But can kittens eat semi-raw chicken? Raw chicken is generally preferable for feeding, as cats’ digestive systems are designed to process meat in this form. Regular feeding of cooked chicken can lead to digestive problems.
That said, semi-raw or boiled chicken can be given occasionally, as it is rich in essential amino acids for kittens’ development. It’s important, however, not to combine cooked and raw chicken in a single feeding, as their digestion requires different enzymes. To maintain digestive health, it’s best to wait at least 3 hours between feeding these two forms of chicken.
You can start introducing meat into kittens’ diets around two months of age, beginning with minced meat without added salt at a temperature of about 18–25°C (64–77°F). For two-month-old kittens, minced meat can be replaced with small, whole pieces of chicken to promote the development of their milk teeth and chewing muscles. By three months old, raw meat can be given daily, with the size of the pieces gradually increased to help the kitten learn to chew meat fibers on its own.
